Radioactive cats

1°) What words, ideas or feelings come you to mind ?

Strange, contrast, funny, messy, frightened, boredom, loneliness, dangerous...

2°) This photo is part of a series called "family portraits". What kind of is it ?

Firstly can we say that it's photo ? It's very strange because a photo represents a moment. Something taken on a moment, without any assemblage. And in this case, the photographer, Sandy Skoglund, have created this cats. They aren't real, she took time to paint these cats in green and to place all of these cats.
Secondly can we say that it's a family ? We just see on this photo an old couple. The old man seems to be very sad, bored. I have the impression of seeing an old man who stays on his chair every day, a man who makes always exactelly the same thing. We can't see the old woman's head. She is putting it on her fridge.

3°) What does it show ? (describe the various elements, the situation, the atmosphere, etc...)

The scene takes place in a messy kitchen, if we can speak about a kitchen... There are just a fridge, a table, two chairs (which one who is broken and devoured by the cats) It's empty, when I look at this photo it's very cold, I haven't the sensation of a "warm" room. The back ground and the furnitures are dark. Just one thing is couloured : the cats. But the title of this photo : "Radioactive cats" make us think that these cats are not very sympathic and probably really dangerous ! However they are the only thing couloured, interesting and they are sweet in green !

4°) What are the themes ?

Danger, paradox, radioactive, contrast.

5°) What is the "message" ? (if there is really a message)

I don't really see a message in this work of art... In fact I don't really understand why Sandy Skoglund has chosen this constrast between the cats in green and the background in dark. I think she wants us to focolize our intention on the cats but after that... I don't undertsand this "message".

6°) What, based on this example, is the purpose of this work of "art" ?

This work of art was created for transmit a message. When we see this photo, we can have a reflexion about why the photographer took this photo and what she wanted to "say" with it. But sometimes it's very difficult to see what it's this message and it's the case here.
